it started with a camera

Alla fantasizes on a good camera to capture the Alaska views coming our way in less than 3.5 weeks. I am generally pleased with my simple camera, after all , it did what other camera failed to achieve. Survive a year in my possession. For a camera, this is quite a feat.

My mom and Moti came for a visit. This would be the first time they would meet Alla’s parents. We were both slightly nervous, but it went well. we were supposed to meet at alla’s sister Inna, but the rain (yes lots of rain!!! In July) , so we relocated to Alla’s parents newly renovated apartment, which looks nice colored in a color I cannot define (perhaps peach?). no need to bore with the details, but the evening went smooth, I drank 2 sips of champagne, Alla’s mom made a ton of food (3 types of fish, schnitzel, mash potatoes, rice, egg plant , fish eggs, stuffed peppers and more and more), then deserts and more food…), with initial introductions over and hours of poker talk complete, we were ready for a camping weekend.

We packed the car like it was a minivan, the trunk was shocked from the amount of stuff crammed into it. I made sure to charge the batteries on the camera and remove the non rechargeable batteries from the charger. We went for breakfast at a local original pancake house (a very good place) for my meat lovers omelet, Alla’s corned beef and hash and our banana foster’s French toast. mmmmmm…

We stopped by Wal-mart for emergency bathing suit shopping, and drove away. On the way we needed some emergency pillows and sleeping bags and stopped at,,, another Wal-mart.

Though we left at 8, it was afternoon by the time we got close. We stopped at the falling water  house famous for it’s falls. http://www.wright-house.com/frank-lloyd-wright/fallingwater.html

This house was built to be one with nature, and its kind of is. So we walked the grounds, and stopped by a side stream. I moved a side to take a photo with my fully charged simple camera and a second later I slipped on the greenery by the riverside, and landed on the side, unfortunately the camera went in flying a few meters away and landed in the water. Moti tried to get the camera, took one step ahead, hit the same slippery ground and came crashing down. He crashed worse than I, but no damage other than a nasty bruise on the side of the leg. It was hard to get back up, due to the slippery ground. I had to take my shoes off to get my camera out of the water. The camera actually turns on, but shows nothing. I will wait a few more days before I announce it dead.

I would send you photos from that lovely house, but the photos are wet.

We finished the tour and drove to Ohiopyle with another stop at a local wood shop with the most amazing things made of wood (or plastic), and now we have a bear and bear cub fridge magnet, a 4 piece so cute squirrel and a 2 bears paper towel rack (I would send photos, but) and a bears lamp for my mom as a gift. With the car yet full of more stuff (between us, on the floor, behind the back seats, from the ceiling), and wallets somewhat emptier we finally got to Ohiopyle (lucky there is no Wal-mart in that area.). Mom and Moti were to stay at some lodge, and we made fun with them on every shack we saw on the way, but their lodge was a very nice little 2 bed room place, with lots of images of fish and hunting related themes. We snuched before finally making it to our camp site long after everyone, pitching our tent with the dying light and enjoy gourmet campout food. Real steaks, Smores, and lots of stuff. This camping is an annual event of Alla’s family , their friends, kids, dogs, etc.. and they bring so much food. Boris (Gennady’s brother, Gennady is alla’s brother in law. Gennady is in California at this time) spent hours cooking steaks, soup which they all liked (not for me, has eggplant), rice and lamb stew. The bonding of both families continued by the fire and later we went to sleep in the tent and my mom went to sleep at the lodge.

The trip would continue the next day with breakfast and rafting , but for now good night from some Microtel in route 19, new York.

i am so ticked off

I forgot to mention that yesterday people were clapping on the plane as it took to the air. My seat was 20C, usually the number is irrelevant, except it was the last row, and the door next to me led to the bath room, never a good place to be on a plane. The emergency seat for the flight attendant is in front of the door, in this narrow hallway, we crouched together. The stewardess asked me if I wanted to meet the designer of the plane. I didn’t get it and asked why, and she said so I could ask him why the seats are so narrow and there is no room to move. I guess she dislikes the plane. On the other side sat a man with a lap child, cute blond kid , that likes to cry. At some point I went to sleep, after being in so many locations in the last week, and the many driving hours, it takes more than a crying baby to wake me up.

I am now an expert on Kansas city airport, and ignoring the misleading signs I went straight to the rental shuttle bus. Went in and stood first in line. The renal clerk look up my name and said “you don’t need to check in Mr. E, just pick any car from the emerald club” J

To start , I am still not used to be called Mr., it’s an American thing. But I do like the club. I wasn’t very meticulous in adding all my mileage points, and many times I was traveling with others and they rented. I am doing a better job with that now (oh, emerald is the lowest form of club in this company, there are higher levels..). So I walked out to lane of the emerald cars and they had very standard cars, so I walked the isle and approached the end, and one car stood out. I don’t usually care for cars. If I see a nice car I will look, but I never dreamt of owning one or anything like that. The car was asking and bugging me to take it, I had no choice, it was out of my hands.

So I took the little bug of the people for a ride.

Having missed the potter movie the previous day in DC, I decided I am due for a movie, and made my way to st. Jo (they city with the wrong charger from 2 weeks ago) and followed Bondi to the Trail cinema. This cinema looks like it was left along the trails in previous years and left to die. It was closed, like other old cinemas within the city, they cannot compete with the big mega cinemas. I asked Bondi again where to go, and now it found 2 more cinemas. So I drove to the mall, and the cinema is located next to best buy (returning to the scene of the crime). I arrived a few minutes after the movie began.  With over 2 hours to kill, I browsed the list of movies, and only one was available.

Have you seen Borat? Well, Sasha Baron Cohen has a new movie, Brunu. I liked Borat, it was crazy but smart. This movie is beyond crazy Shocking!!!, very shocking. Nudity is general good in movies, but this had way to much, and male full frontal nudity is not what I prefer seeing. And there was lots of it. Other than that the movie is like Borat in it’s essence. Bring real people to see events who make them uncomfortable and their reactions are funny. I don’t know how he managed to dress like a gay Dos in Jerusalem and getting away with it. The scenes are partially fake, but partially real which makes it interesting. I guess I recommend the movie, but be prepared to be shocked.

I still had half an hour before Potter, so I drove next door to eat. It was 30 seconds walking, but I drove (this was more of a shocking revelation then Brunu), and then drove back.

I like the potter movies, they are the closer to the book than any other movie seen in the last years, and I read the whole series, this one was somewhat less. I guess it could be from my seat, 2nd row on the very edge in a cinema with a large screen, or the guy next to me who kept texting all through the movie, or the couple that brought a crying baby, who was crying all the time. You would too if you were 2 years old and had to look at Draco Malfoy. I though this movie was PG13- not for babies. A baby does not wake me up but does prevent me from focusing on the screen. I would say it’s the worst of the potters so far, with only one to go, I hope they change the director for the last one.

I drove another hour and something in small dark roads towards Albany,  few small animals were seen by the roads, not sure if they were skunks or raccoons. One of them smelled like a skunk. I now know how to recognize this friendly odor. these roads are simply fun, like roller coasters. Very small hills, and the road goes up and down, up and then down again…. But the hills are steep, so after the top, you don’t see the bottom, which makes it fun. Many of these in the dark definitely keeps you awake.

Today I woke up late and went for breakfast in the restaurant on the other side of the highway (high way here is 1 lane each side, with one car every minute approximately. The sounds of horses caught my attention.

I was lucky to be here in an annual event which displays candy bar race, bat race, panty race, I don’t know what these are, these are side events for the main event which is horse racing.  In a closed muddy ring, there were a few barrels, and horses and riders rode fast and raced for the grand price. they let everyone ride, those with skill and those without (whom are still better then I). the event wasn’t very interesting to me, to slow between rides, and the rides are all the same, any way, not everything is for everyone.

I got breakfast at the only restaurant here and drove to grand trace state forest after asking the waitress is there anything to do there, she didn’t even know what it was! There are no other parks in this area so I was surprised.

The roads to the park are small, some asphalt and some gravel. Usually in these parks, they have a park map to go, this was no exception. I parked next to some truck and got ready to go, where a guy came to the truck with a rifle in hand. I am no weapons expert (only assault rifles I had in the army) but I assumed it was a small caliber gun. I asked the guy, and he was hunting squirrels. I don’t understand why hunt for squirrels when there is a perfectly good chicken in the super market.

I walked the path, which looks like made by a tractor, but there were lots of low trees, high vegetation, flowers, butterflies, dragonflies.

Something rattled for over 30 seconds and I stopped. I don’t think it was a rattler (they don’t rattle as much in movies). I think it was a grass hopper of some kind, but I took a detour around it, went down to the little pond and to the hill on the other side, I stopped to survey the way onward, I saw a red deer in the distance, a hawk taking flight and no squirrels(I would hide too if it was Gil season).  I felt something on my leg , looked down and saw few black spider looking things on them. I quickly brushed them off. Ticks!!! Ugly and stubborn. I quickly decided this was not a place to come with short pants, and made my way back, and during the way, removing more ticks.  I was bit by a tick last year in Nashville, and around the area it was burning for a week. So I was kind of paranoid and kept looking at my legs.

I got in my Bug car. drove to the next town and caught 2 more ticks on my leg. It’s hard to brush them off in the car. I attempted tickecide, those things are impossible to kill. You (I) squash them, step on them,  pinch them, squeeze them and still they move. I guess I should use fire, but I don’t smoke and have no matches. I managed to do it eventually.

From them I drove to the big city of Bethany which has a pizza hut and, well that’s it almost. They have ‘Big Cinema’ which has only 1 movie hall. I skipped that since the next showing was 5 hours later, then went to the super market to buy a book - yes the super market. The library is closed, so are the book stores (Saturday).

I headed back to Albany and saw the horses still running around the same little arena and went to snutch after a final tick test

Oooo, so much from just a simple day, either I am very bored or,,, I guess I am bored

Cheers and good night

just a blogie

Surprise surprise, stuck at an airport.

Detroit this time, on my way back to Kansas city. We got on the plane, waited for an hour, then they started suggesting that they have issues, back on the ground, over an hour. The technician will have an answer in an hour or so, so we wait.

I asked the counter person if I could change my flight to st Louis or Des Moines. They say yes, with a charge! What a huzpa. I would be rerouted if they canceled the flight. Got to love airlines.

Yesterday I landed in cleveland (busy flying schedule recently) and a sign at the airport caught my attention.

Lung transplant at the cleveland Clinique every 3 days. I don’t know why it takes so long for them to do that? I think it should be quicker, this operation should be ‘Plung and play’, just connect a vain and an artery and you are done. Well enough on operations.

I was back in Alone , new York Wednesday, ended the day back in Erie, and left to cleveland early Thursday morning to catch a flight to DC for a test at the Israel embassy. The flight was delayed for just a few minutes, which were enough to miss the train from Baltimore to DC. With an hour and something for the test, and the next train an hour later, I had a cab for a 100$ or supper shuttle (cheap, only 37$). I asked the super clerk , if I would be on time “aha” was all she said.

“this plane is just not fixable” was the message I just heard, so now they are looking for another plane. I have to tell you, writing here is just not comfortable. They have outlets on the floors where is usually write, but jammed in next to sits, so you cannot sit and relax. I am in a courtesy phone booth, which is too low for the lap top- annoying. And now I have to move to gate B4, no plane yet. Why can’t they move the unfixable plane and bring another here?.

3 minutes go by..

On the floor again next to B4.

“Aha” is a band I like from the 80s(“take on me”, “sun always shine on tv”), and not the answer you want to hear from a super clerk. So I got in to the shuttle and we were on our slow traffic way to the city which is not a part of any state. Was I there on time? Take a wild guess.

DC has a road called embassy row- lots of embassies one next to the others. Israel is not there,  there  is another smaller area of embassies, so I pass Bahrain, Ghana, Kuwait and some others. You can recognize an embassy by a plaque and the flag. I was looking for mine, and then I recognized it by something found only next to Israel embassies. The security agent, with the sun glasses and ear pieces, I saw that before the plaque and the flag.

10 minutes later after clearing security (and noticing that I left my phone in the supper shuttle somewhere next to Bahrain.) I entered Jerusalem hall, and the open university clerk, told me I am late, and if I had a good excuse, I didn’t, just the truth. She told me I was expected at 9, and my invitation says 9.30. we argued on that, and I noticed it is very stupid of me to argue with someone who should do me a favor and go out of their way to allow me to enter. She left and came back with the approval. And the test began. I am doing ok in these types of test where you have some event and question to analyze it, I find these easy-and usually get around 80 in them, but I hate to write so many pages (hurts my hands). The test ended , I think ok in what I figure to be the most useless course I am taking. I wish I knew this before I signed up. the only other Examy in the room finished the same time I did and we walked out together. I walked with Anat towards the metro. When her husband surprises her and came to pick her up. Itay came here to study at Georgetown and Anat joined and works from home. They offered to go for lunch and we went to their favorite café.

We set on the back area of the café in the sun under one of those big umbrellas. This place is Green as Georgetown is a very Green city, this place had no cokes , so I had water and a simple chicken sandwich presented in a very nice way. After that Itay got back to work, and Anat and I went to tour the city. There wasn’t enough for one off the museums so we went to the national cathedral. It’s the 2nd largest in the US and 6th in the world.  It was built in the 20th century , but it is a gothic church looks very impressive and like it was done hundreds of years ago. We took the tour and heard lots of facts and nice trivia info on this place. Did you know that there is a president buried there, and Helen Keller as well (her ashes any way).

Update- the plane still has maintenance issues- I don’t know why we had to move a gate, and they are saying that there is no due flight time yet (the flight to st Louis took off, and the one to Des Moines).

The tour operator said that Helen keller and about 2 hundred others are buried in a Columbarium

Captain just came in, there may be another plane and he “believes” it will magically transport us to Kansas city-

And now the official word, ‘exciting’ Kansas city is getting closer

We got a 7$ voucher for lunch which barely gets nothing at an airport

The 2nd plane had maintenance issues as well, but the 3rd one was good- I am now on it and it is in the air

I always knew that columbarium was a place where they grew pigeons in medical times, I told the tour guide about it, and looked it up and it is a place for Urn burial. I need to look up the pigeon thing.

So the national cathedral is an impressive building. I would say I would worth a visit, even if it was in Paris or any other city in Europe, check it out.

Anat drove me to union station, which is an impressive building by itself, I got my ticket, and tried to catch a nap on the train till the evil conductor woke me up.

I went to the supper shuttle counter (I used Anat and itay’s phone to verify that my phone was found and it was waiting for me). And had time to refuse an offer not to fly out and get a 250$ back (place was over booked). If I knew about today, I would probably have taken it.

The south west flight attendant was in a good mood , he was singing and telling jokes on the PA, one of the reasons why I prefer this airline (the delaying today is northwest- which was bought by delta). I think I should avoid the combinations of Delta, Detroit and Kansas city- not good things for me to be at.(maybe I should add Atlanta and newark to this list)

Ok- that is  all for today, I guess I will take a nap- still 2 hours to drive today to Albany (not new York), and maybe see the new harry potter movie today….

The test is why I have been quiet recently- now it’s done, still a lot to catch up on, but later

Cheers from somewhere over Indiana.

in the name of the king

Looking in to my draft folder- I found this half written entry from February

The critics corner..

Ray lliota, lili sobieski, jason statham ,Burt Reynolds, john Reyes Davis, the professor from sliders, some other actors,  orcs, mages, an epic tale in amazing views- how can you ruin it? Why would you?

Do you remember the A-Team – everyone fires M16- no one ever hits

Here you see archers firing, next scene soldiers moving, than more archers, then some one with an arrow stuck to their chest- they didn’t even try to show the flying arrows. Some acrobats are jumping, another moves away but so inexpertly – this is a new movie- with what appears to be a high budget and yet so bad.

At least it has integrity and it is based on a computer game I used to play (dungeon siege) and in some scenes it appears they tried to make it look like the game- so- 5.7 for making the effort on the Frodo scale- and possible best fantasy movie in Oscar the grouch awards….

p.s I hear they are remaking the A-Team movie- with bruce willis as Hannibal smith- I pity the foo who misses it….

Ok back to now- 14 hours at the hospital today – so time to go to sleep- I have no more unwritten blogs now- just 3 weeks I didn’t write about….

on 3 moons , bars and send button

If you have a fly swatter in your room, there must be a reason.

I didn’t see anyfliesas I came in, but nissoury nights brought mysery – with moskitous and other small flying things.

This is the only motel in Albany and you cant even find it on google.

Did you know what pesos were? Potato pesos that it. They are like tots, which are like croucketes but oilier - and not as good - must every area invent different namesfor similar things?

Yesterday I drove back to cleveland to catchmy flight to kansas city. It was a full moon and not a single cloud. The time was 4 am and the moon was west to my location and iwas kind of headed tis way all the way (1.5 hour drive); some things cannot be explained, it was just amasing. I finaly finaly finished a book, usualy I read faster, but this book took forever, fitting since it was about angles, heaven, corruption of the church and how they all affect the future of the worlds, the 3rd part of his dark materials (you may have seen the 1st book which was a movie- the goldan compass). And now time to waste moved to the next book, called 2 moons about a girl movingto euclid, oh- euclid is like I would move to ramat hen, just another suburb -  I think it is stange as I was passing today on the way to the moon by euclid – I have no idea if there is meaning here ( I always look for a meaning) but it is just odd.

My reading rate has slowed , but books on tapes is going well. I just finished hearing ‘to kill a mocking bird’ an interesting tale on alabama in 1935. Whilein vegas I was speaking with corie which was a tech from another company on this book. Corie is black and from alabama, and the book displays the racism that was still there just 70 years ago, so it was interesting. Since the book isdone, I started anotehr, and here on thie missoury road trip I took another-both very interesting so far (nicolas sparks and niel gayman).

On suterday alla left with her charger by mistake, and I had her phone, which died in the night so again I had a phone with no charge.

I was arriving to kansas city with the knowledge that a charger for my phone awaits me, but still woried, the last time iwas here I ended sleeping in hugeconferance room with no shower being bounced from place to place.so now I was watching carefully on the signs and found my slef out of the airport with no where in front of me- if you follow the signsin kansa city you will get lost, I understand dorothy a lot better now.

Took me an hour to leave with the car from kcity and head north towards the promise chargeland. Arrived at best buy and discovered that it is not the best, not was there a buy, they had a charger, but not for my phone, from there I went to radio shack and no luck, the wireless solutions guy was sure he had one, but no. another verizon booth said no, they can order one for me, but it will arrive in a week (they can order only if they have more then certain amount of stock, she actualy told me that. The verizon girl told me to visit the next booth that has lots of chargers from various types. There was a very helping clerk helped me tear up the booth , with no luck. With no charge and no phone I had no choice and I bought a prep aid phone. I also pre paid for minutes. They even threw in a car charger. So juiced up I headed for albany. I was listening for 20 minutes for a conf call, then the phone disconnects for no service in the small towns, and I don’t see the Versison guys from the commercial any wahere neare, I guess they are all in holywood or where ever they go to shoot the commercials.  from there the phone refuses to call!.

The message that I hear is – “please type your 10 digits of the number you wish to call, don’t hit send”. How the fudge can I talk without hitting the send bottom? This is a simple prepaid phone, not a pshicic hot line that knows when I want to call. This is too much.

My send less phone works when people call me

Well anyway its after midnight, another day in no reception land awaits

Good night

thing new, found, lost and lost forever

Only 2 hours delayed for the Las Vegas flight, which I slept the whole way through, and slept an hour and a half of the floor at the airport.

Came back to empire land, and went to slept for 4 hours- a much needed snuch.

An addition to the previous blog; I forgot to add that my wallet was left under the seat of Miss James, for 2 days. That car went to Valet several times.. but no harm done. I remembered this because of a shiny blue thing arriving in the mail. Curtsey of my lovely fiancée, a credit card. 2 months ago I received my debit, and now a credit card. I had difficulties getting one and this is truly a great 4th of July gift. No more having to mooch other people from paying on ticket master or few other places that do not except non local cards.. in short, independent.

So now with another card in the wallet? Someone may lose sleep over this (but not meJ) .

For the celeb report ( someone must fill in for hi guy, which is coming off the air). Miss Slocomb died today (and miss Brahms died earlier this year). So there in no one left to ‘take care of you’. This special report came in from my lichtensteinian reporter in new jersey.

We watched ZNN today and the developing story is that LA is preparing for the funeral of MJ. Underneath was soldier abducted in Afghanistan, gas prices, natural disasters and other non important things.

At the airport yesterday night, the only thing open was wolf gang puck, which is a chain of so called gourmet cooking for the masses. I was once before and very much disliked their butternut squash soup. But no other choice. They have pizzas , but there wasn’t one without an ingredient I didn’t like, I had to combine, by ordering the pepperoni and  mushroom pizza with no mushrooms and with spicy chicken instead. In this place they make the pizza in front of you, and the clerk tells the chef (not Mr. puck), which opens both eyes largely in disbelief. I assumed this was a first to him.

When the pizza was ready, he shouted   PepMush, no mush with  SPchik – in a funny way. The result was oily and yummy.

Another airport incident occurred while I was sitting somewhere blogging (something happened while I was writing and I failed to add it right away, what a fashla). On the chair next to me there was a takeout box, that someone left (this was before the pizza). A guy walks by, asks me if I am done with it. I say it’s not mine. He takes it, opens it and eats, in the airport. He doesn’t look like a bum so I was surprised. I guess if I was very hungry with no money (which can happen to me by simply not remembering my wallet is), I could see myself doing that; though I must be starving, since I don’t like so many things, what are the chances of finding left over’s with no mushrooms, tomatoes, eggplant, onions, liver, etc…

Bon appétit and have a great independence day and weekend.

i got mugged in prison

This is more than a typical week for me, even by my unusual standards of losing devices and delays.

Its 8:15 now- already in the airport for a night flight , in 3 hours, and it is already delayed by 2 hours… I am spending the night here.

Just a brief devices history. After returning from the holy land I went for work in the empire land and forgot my phone charger there.

For few days I was under the impression the I forgot it at Allas or in the car which was over stuffed with things for the games (which games you ask? Soon an answer). I turned my apartment upside down, the car as well and no luck. Lucky I used a charger conveniently appearing every day in the cubicle behind mine. So I was covered most of the time, except key times.

So I came back to empire land and found my charger. And this was after I left poor Bondi alone in the same place for a month. But eventually both Bondi (the GPS) and the charger were safely in my unsafe hands.

But that was in the distant past (june of 09) we are now back in the now.

Yesterday I used my credit card somewhere, and this morning it was nowhere to be found. Knowing my frequent history, I was sure it would turn up. It wasn't in the hotel room. I tore up my bag, got everything out and back in and nothing. I was sure it was gone, and then like a true Master card, it dropped out of somewhere I searched few times. Just fell on the ground. Oh well , no time to dwell on such things! (should I get out my trusty pouch?)

Almost all is well except the charger , returning from exile had a prison break. It was broken by something stepping on it. I am suspecting myself , though I am not sure. Contacting CSI Vegas on this matter.

Yesterday after 12 hot hours in jail, I went charger hunting, and walked half the strip with a too heavy of a bag (bad mistake). I managed to find aversion booth, but unlucky, they don't carry this model any more (it is not that old of a model), the version dude told me to look in the general store that sells all phones, but they closed. So I walked back passing the shows at treasure island and the amazing fountains at the Bellagio, and the venetian hotel.

I got to the hotel drenched and crashed with no charger.

Whoever said Vegas has a dry heat, never been here today. It was around 40c (108f) and moist. It was actually raining a bit, I am looking for a shower at the airport.

Sometime during the day, I left the jail to search for a phone store. There was a Verizon store across the street. I drove (its America after all, you never walk). The Verizon dudete is saying the price, says I could make a deal and buy the car and the ac charger. I decline the deal, only then she tells me that they don't have it! She can order it , but I will be gone by then. She points me to an all phone store. I get there and they don't carry Verizon phones. The phone guy points me to the Verizon store… but I decided to avoid this endless loop.

So now I am powerless to provide energy for my powerless phone.

I guess Vegas was wasted on me, didn't do anything noticeable.  The Vegas police wants me gone, this is the 2nd time in a row I am here without gambling, it's illegal here.

D the local prison focal prison who is a sweet lady who lost 2 husbands and lets everyone know how much random people (like airport security) make. But is truly a nice person. Gave us some unique mugs (haven't seen them ) but somehow I was mugged out of them, so I don't have my jail memento. I should get them at some point, I hope.

The answer from the previous time…

A chuckling can't take care of itself – like a bird chuckling, they are either blind at birth, or too small , or helpless to find food (human baby's are also like chicklings גוזל)

A chick can take care of itself to some extent. Like a duck chick or a chicken chick. They walk, follow the mother goose around, and eat. אפרוח

I have to go power up the lap top (for which I have a cord) and maybe freshen up, it's like a sauna in here.
